Decrease Tomato Damage during Sorting
The tomato packing industry is working towards decreasing the amount of physical handling needed during the tomato sorting process. The result of this technology movement is a decrease in the amount of fruit damage occurring while the it moves through the system. One noticeable change is the use of digital cameras to scan the fruit from all angles. These scans determine the diameter-to-length ratio used during the sorting process to keep like sized fruit together. This allows for grouping like sized tomatoes to be able to place them in the same packing container for distribution. Some vendors require specific sizes and this decreases the time needed to accomplish this tomato sorting task.
