Umpiring Baseball
When umpiring baseball, the arbiter must be able to stand his ground, to verbally defend himself. But if your goal is to make the grieved party walk away, it’s sometimes best to let him have the last word. You should not let the argument get personal or prolonged—admittedly subjective areas—but the official who always insists on having the last word is heading for a high ejection rate.
An umpire’s attitude toward his or her partner is also important. Treat them with the respect you would accord any teammate, for that is what they are. Your only teammate(s). Learn your partner’s name, have good eye contact and communication, be sensitive and supportive.
