Using Bleach for Water Purification

There are some tricks you need to know in order to use bleach in an emergency water purification scenario. For clear water, you only need to use two drops of bleach per liter, but if the water in cloudy that number should be doubled. After shaking it up and letting the water stand for a half an hour, you should be able to smell a faint scent of chlorine. If you don’t smell it, you are going to need to do the procedure again. Also, bleach tends to lose its potency over time, so you will need to use about twice the amount if it is a year old, and using bleach that is two years old is not recommended.
